We take a look at the first offering from Peter Hills Productions Having seen the trailer on youtube and Peter filming at different comps I was interested to give it a look.
First off, it's a nicely packaged homemade DVD ( so it might not play on PS2's and some older DVD players) but looks pretty professional all the same. The cover image, a collage of George Bush cut n' pasted with Hitler and an MBS board is a bit agro-cool lo-fi punk, a bit ignorant dumb-ass. So out of the box and into the player to give it a spin.
It starts off well with a good intro of some nice lifestyle scenes ( re; people in tents ) mixed up with some interesting riding shoots, before moving on to the first section from court farm 07, which is a good mixture of boarderX and freestyle shots all cheekily cut together to songs you probably know like Galvanize by the Chems. This more or less sets the tone for the rest of the DVD.
All the sections are pretty well shot with some interesting angles, and nicely edited together, although a few editing tricks would have been improved by their less-frequent use. There was also a couple of blank-screen pauses on my copy, which left me wondering for a bit if the dvd has stopped? Despite this, Pete has managed to film some of the best freestlye from 2007, like Tom Kirkman hands-in-pockets backflip and AJ's 9 at The Edge. He is also one of the few people to have captured the epic size of the SWMBC Night Air jumps.
Content wise, My favourite sections are the Steve Birkbeck section. There's not much riding in it which is a shame- if there had been some footage of Steve doing what he does best riding in the woods it would have been incredible but never mind- it shows the genius of his commentating and his time as ATBA-UK chairman. The other section which stands out in my mind is the first section from The Edge. It has some close BoaderX racing, sunshine (a rarity in 2007) and some of the best freestyle from that year. All mixed up with shots of a load of people having a load of fun. The sections in general are mostly from 2007. With the only section from 2008 being from Haredown and featuring footage from the freestyle; Which was a wicked freestyle session, probably one of the best from last season, just could done with a bit more variety of riding shots and some more riding from 2008 but never mind, you still get a good all-round feel for the UK championships.
Now it don't look like Shralpdown, but in general, Revolve is good, mildly rebellious DVD and ideal if you are new to the sport, into freestyle and was wondering what was going on at the comps in 2007. It also has a tribute to Andre in the bonus section which will always making you smile whether you knew him or not.
And why revolve? why the nazi bush boarder? we'll just have to keep on guessin'. ( my theory is: he's in laison with someone ;) now that's rebelling...
